Chelmsford is the closest of our Essex areas to the showroom, and one of the easiest to serve well. It is also one where the housing stock genuinely suits awnings: Moulsham and Springfield carry solid Victorian and Edwardian property with high rear walls, and the newer estates around Beaulieu Park and Chancellor Park have the wide, plain elevations that make fitting straightforward.
The villages are a different proposition. Writtle, Danbury, Little Baddow, Boreham and Ingatestone run to period cottages, weatherboard, render and a fair amount of listed property, often with conservation-area constraints attached. Danbury in particular sits high and gets noticeably more wind than the city does, and we specify for that rather than ignoring it.
So we survey before we quote, every time. Our surveyor comes out from our Barking showroom (IG11 8BL) — usually a forty-five minute run — measures, photographs the elevation, checks what the wall will actually carry, and works out where the sun lands at the hours you are outside. You get a price for your house, not a postcode average.
On the newer Chelmsford estates the constraint is usually not the wall but the space. Rear elevations on modern builds are often narrower than the garden suggests, and frequently broken by bi-fold doors or a kitchen extension. We size to the elevation rather than the terrace, and where the run is interrupted we will propose two smaller cassettes over one compromised span.
On the Victorian and Edwardian stock around Moulsham and Springfield the wall will generally carry a full 4-metre projection comfortably, and those gardens usually want it. Motorised operation is standard, with wind sensors fitted as a matter of course on the higher, more exposed plots out towards Danbury and Little Baddow.
Fabric inland is mostly a question of fade resistance and how the colour reads against the brick. Sunbrella and Tempotest are both solution-dyed acrylics — the colour goes through the fibre rather than sitting on the surface, so after a decade of Essex summers it is still the colour you chose. We bring the full sample book to the survey; judging fabric off a screen is how people end up disappointed.

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do on the newer Chelmsford estates. The awning fits above the opening rather than across it, so the doors work normally with the awning out. The survey is where we establish whether there is enough clear wall above the frame — that is the constraint, not the doors themselves.
With a wind sensor, yes. The sensor retracts the awning automatically when gusts pass the threshold, protecting both the fabric and the arms. On the higher plots around Danbury and Little Baddow we fit one as standard rather than as an upgrade.
Sometimes. A retractable awning on a rear elevation is often acceptable, but listed buildings and some conservation-area frontages do need consent, and it depends on the specific property. Our surveyor will give you an honest view on the day and can supply drawings and specifications for an application.
