Canterbury is one of the more constrained places we fit awnings, and that is precisely why it is worth doing well. The city centre sits almost entirely inside a conservation area, the cathedral precincts carry World Heritage status, and listed buildings are not the exception here — on some streets they are the rule. A supplier who quotes off a postcode and a photograph will get it wrong.
Away from the walls the picture changes completely. Hales Place, Thanington and the St Stephen's side are largely inter-war and post-war housing with straightforward brickwork and generous rear gardens. The villages — Bridge, Chartham, Littlebourne, Wingham, Sturry — run to everything from flint and weatherboard cottages to substantial modern detacheds. Each of those takes a different fixing.
So we survey before we quote, every time. Our surveyor comes out from our Barking showroom (IG11 8BL), measures the elevation, photographs it, checks what the wall will actually carry, and works out where the sun lands at the hours you are actually outside. You get a price for your house, not a county average.
On period property in and around the city the priority is a system that disappears when it is retracted. We specify full cassettes on conservation-area work as standard — the fabric and arms close into a sealed housing, so what is visible for most of the year is a slim box tucked under the eaves rather than an exposed roller and folded arms. Frame colours are matched to recede against brick, flint or render rather than to stand out.
Canterbury gardens tend to be long rather than wide, which usually means projection matters more than width. Standard full-cassette systems reach around 4 metres. Where a terrace needs more than that, or where the elevation is broken by a bay or a rear extension, we generally propose two linked cassettes rather than one oversized span — better in wind, easier to service, and a cleaner line along the back of the house.
Fabric is where east Kent buyers usually spend the most thought, and rightly so. Sunbrella and Tempotest are both solution-dyed acrylics: the colour goes through the fibre rather than being printed on the surface, so after ten Kent summers it is still the colour you chose. We bring the full sample book to the survey — judging fabric off a screen is how people end up disappointed.

No. We quote the same prices in Canterbury as we do in London. The A2 and M2 run is straightforward and we would rather win the work than lose it on a travel line. Survey and fitting visits are both included.
Possibly. Most of the city centre is covered by a conservation area and there is a great deal of listed property. A retractable awning on a rear elevation that is not visible from the street is frequently acceptable; a front elevation on a listed building generally is not, without consent. Our surveyor will give you an honest view on the day and can supply drawings and product specifications if you need to make an application.
Yes — CT5 and CT6 are part of the same round. Worth knowing that the coastal exposure there is a real factor: we fit wind sensors as standard on seafront and elevated plots, and we specify marine-grade fixings where salt air is going to be working on them year-round.
